Introduction to the Laboratory of Recycled and Functional Building Materials of Henan University

Located in Building D of the 16th group of Jinming campus, the laboratory is a key laboratory of Henan University. Affiliated with the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture, it is a school-level research platform. There are a total of 21 research and experimental personnel, including 5 professors and 9 associate professors, and 62% hold a doctorate degree. With an area of 745 square meters and over 190 sets of equipment of various kinds, the lab is worth about 5.5 million yuan and is the experimental base for graduate students and scientific base for teachers in School of Civil Engineering and Architecture.


Our lab has construction materials testing equipment for the concrete, asphalt and soil industries, mechanical testing equipment, concrete adiabatic temperature rise test device, freeze-thaw testing equipment, impermeability testing equipment, and alkali cement material testing equipment, shrinkage cracking of concrete test equipment, pressure steaming test equipment, cement performance testing equipment, box-type high-temperature furnaces and so forth. As the country and Henan Province increase their investment in Double First-Class universities, some modern test analysis systems and precision instruments will be added to improve the experimental conditions for the research of various types of construction materials.


Our laboratory offers a platform for teachers to conduct research and for civil engineering and materials science postgraduates to receive training and do research. In recent years, the lab has provided technical conditions for research on traditional building materials, recycled building materials, building functional materials, and road functional materials, implemented vertical and horizontal scientific research projects in related areas and completed trial work before patent applications. Every year 10 to 15 graduate students finish their experimental work in the lab.


Our research efforts currently focus on solid waste utilization and recycling building materials and road and bridge functional materials. As for the former, we work on the resource utilization of solid waste in building materials including tailings, stone powder, magnesium slag, alkali slag, steel slag, slag, construction waste and straw. They are mainly used to manufacture cement, concrete admixtures, concrete aggregates, wall materials, water permeable materials, insulation materials, building functional materials, etc. As for the latter, we work on the protection of water environment, acoustic environment, thermal environment, and vibration, recycling of road materials, application of solid waste in road and bridge engineering, and road and ground systems and materials in sponge cities.
