The Institute of Steel and Spatial Structure of Henan University was established with the approval of Henan University in March 2008. In June 2010, the school-level scientific research institution was officially listed as a school-level general scientific research institution after adjustment, and it was listed as a key scientific research institution of Henan University in October 2017.

The Institute of Steel and Space Structure of Henan University currently has 10 scientific researchers, including 1 distinguished professor, 1 Henan famous teaching teacher, 3 associate professors, 9 doctors, and 21 graduate students. The director is Professor Du Wenfeng and the secretary is Associate Professor Zhang Hui. Professor Dong Shilin of Zhejiang University, Professor Zhang Yigang of Beijing University of Technology, Professor Ben Young of Hong Kong University, Professor Gao Boqing of Zhejiang University, and Dr. Yan Shu of Hong Kong University were invited successively to give lectures and guidance. Established industry-university-research cooperation relationship with Henan Yadong Zhonghong Construction Engineering Co., Ltd., Kaifeng Tianyuan Grid Co., Ltd., and Kaifeng Anlida Metal Engineering Co., Ltd.

The Institute of Steel and Space Structure of Henan University undertakes teaching tasks for undergraduates such as "Structural Mechanics", "Steel Structure", "Civil Engineering English" and graduate courses "Spatial Structure". Presided over 5 vertical scientific research projects, including 2 National Natural Science Foundation projects, 8 provincial scientific research projects, 2 provincial industry-university research cooperation projects, more than 20 horizontal projects, including 2 international engineering projects, with a total research funding of more than 4 million yuan. A total of 150 papers were published, 40 were collected by SCI and EI, 4 textbooks were published, and 20 national patents were approved. The appraisal of 2 scientific research achievements reached the domestic leading level. More than 10 scientific research awards and 3 provincial awards.
